OUR STORY
Hi! I’m Maha. Founder and owner of Raising Parents, mom, wife, sex and relationship therapist, psychologist, and just overall extravert and connection-seeker.
Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine building something like Raising Parents, but here I am. As many of you know, becoming a mom changes you from your deepest core and completely shakes and reinvents your identity. That’s exactly what happened to me. I thought that being a sex and relationship therapist was the only thing I would ever do, because I love it, and it was part of who I am. But then I had our son in 2022, and I felt like there was something else I needed to do because I was different, and what mattered to me changed.
I grew up in Lebanon, where family and community are the highest of values. I was ten years old when my older sisters started having babies, and I grew up watching them and their kids be held and supported by my family, their in-laws, and other community members - they were surrounded by warmth and help. I left Beirut to study in London, and then lived in Dubai for a few years. That’s where I met my husband, Bo. Coming from New York himself, we eventually found ourselves living in New York, then Southern California, and then Colorado, where we finally decided to make our home. In 2022 we had our son, Rayaan.
I always knew I loved babies, but I never expected to love our baby and having a baby this much. I also never expected the postpartum months to feel as isolating as they did. That loneliness is something that no one prepared me for, especially having grown up seeing my sisters have their village around them. Another thing that I wasn’t prepared for was how much grief is involved in having a child. Every stage, every new thing, and every joy, is accompanied by a deep sadness around the loss of what has gone. Watching him grow also means grieving the younger version of him that I miss so deeply. What helped me get through that first year until today, is having mom best friends in other cities that I could call and text every day to share all the things from the excitement of the first smiles, to the overwhelming sadness of that grief, and even the raw questions like: “Hey, does this poop look too slimy?”.
Fast forward two years, and I found myself unable to fall back asleep at 2am one night. Suddenly this vision of a space for parents came to life, and it grew and evolved in so many ways since then. I’ve always known this as a person and as a therapist, but this belief deepened and solidified when I became a mom - that connection is what makes life meaningful. And that’s the essence of Raising Parents.
I am grateful for all the support I’ve received as a mom, person, and business owner, from my husband, to my friends and family, and even Boulder county and other businesses. It takes a village to raise the kids, it takes a village to open a business, and it takes a business to raise the parents.
